  7.     Ethnicity is in at the San Francisco fire department these
  8. days. The reason: fears that a program to promote minorities
  9. will hold back those classified as Caucasian. City officials
  10. report a wave of petitioners claiming long-lost ethnic
  11. identities. One 16-year veteran, previously listed as Italian,
  12. documented Spanish ancestry to qualify as Hispanic. Some
  13. minority fire fighters, meanwhile, are complaining that the
  14. bureaucracy has changed their classifications to "white." San
  15. Francisco's civil service commission says it will consider
  16. publicizing ethnic classifications so employees can challenge
  17. colleagues suspected of making shady heritage claims.
